KAKINADA: A farmer has alerted Forest officials about spotting a tiger, along with its cub, in the hills near Bhimolu village of Gopalapuram mandal in East Godavari district. This has led to a scare within the people of nearby villages, including Rampalem.

Forest officials have advised people living in these areas not to venture out of their houses or go to their fields from dawn to dusk. However, they have not confirmed any movement of a tiger in the area.

Rajamahendravaram Forest Territorial Range Officer (FTRO) N. David Raj told Deccan Chronicle that the farmer, Nagaraju, had alerted a neighbouring farmer Ramakrishna and those working on his land about his sighting of the tiger and its cub. They then informed the forest department.

When Forest officials checked the area, they found no pugmarks of the tiger. In the interim, some farmers told officials about wild boars raiding their fields. David Raj observed that the tiger could be trying to hunt the wild-boars. “Though we have not found any signs of the movement of a tiger, we have installed six cameras as a precautionary measure,” the FTRO disclosed. However, the cameras will be functional only from Monday morning.

Bhimolu is about 15 kilometres from the Karakapadu Reserve Forest, spread over nearly 2,000 hectares. There is another reserve forest over 150 acres near Komatigunta in the area.
