Telugu NRIs feeling insecure in US

Immigration laws turn tough under Trump administration

Vijayawada:A section of Telugu NRIs in the US is feeling a bit insecure while some are anxious, given the unpredictability of President Donald Trump’s administration that is coming up with new legislations at lightning speed.

One the one hand, Trump’s plans to introduce stringent immigration laws are a cause of concern. On the other, the proposed Gold Card meant to invest in the US companies to get permanent residence (PR) with more privileges is likely to not include the Indians in the US. The card is being introduced as a lure to the wealthy people from the Middle East and eastern European countries.

Telugu NRIs say the US citizens are suddenly taking a fancy to nationalism as was advocated by Trump, and are showing a keenness to grab the job opportunities for themselves by seeking a reduction in the job opportunities to immigrants, especially the educated ones from India.

TANA board member and community leader for North America, K Ashok said: “Telugu NRIs are feeling unhappy and insecure. There is a lot of anxiety as to what may come next with regard to their education, employment and residence status in the US.”

They say that law enforcement is likely to be more stringent and scrutiny of Visa applications would be rigorous hereafter, making the Indian Americans on their toes. Given the prevailing uncertainties, they have to be prepared for any eventuality. “We are expecting a complete overhaul of the H1B Visa. There may not be any chance for those who intend to work in gas stations until they find a job elsewhere,” a Telugu resident said.

However, one opinion is that those who are hard-working in nature, having talent and a commitment to work can survive in the US as it would be hard for the companies to get proper replacements from other segments of the society.

AP based NRI, Anand, says, “Our youths can dream of studying and settling in the US still, if they work hard and nurture their latent talent. America is a free country and it helps one to discover oneself. Nothing can stop them even if the laws become tougher.”
