Vijayawada: The swift action of a group of police officers, lifeguards, and marine police personnel saved the life of an 18-year-old from drowning at Surya Lanka beach in Bapatla district on Sunday.
According to police, the youngster, identified as Palakurthi Yashwant from Khammam, ventured into the sea for a bath with four friends around 8 am. A massive wave swept Yashwant into the deeper waters. Upon hearing the screams of bystanders, a rescue team comprising head constable M. Pothuraju, home guard N. Srinivas Rao, and lifeguards Sundara Rao and Nageswara Rao, along with marine police personnel stationed at the Surya Lanka beach outpost, immediately sprang into action and saved the boy.
Bapatla superintendent of police Tushar Dudi commended head constable Pothuraju, home guard Srinivas Rao, and lifeguards Sundara Rao and Nageswara Rao for their prompt and courageous efforts. The SP also urged tourists visiting beaches to strictly follow safety protocols prescribed by the police to prevent untoward incidents. He advised visitors to remain vigilant of sudden sea currents and avoid entering the sea under the influence of alcohol.
