TD Returns To Hold Nellore Civic Power After 21 Years, Scripts History In Corporation

The Telugu Desam has scripted a historic comeback in Nellore's civic politics, returning to power in the city corporation after a gap of 21 years.

Nellore: The Telugu Desam has scripted a historic comeback in Nellore's civic politics, returning to power in the city corporation after a gap of 21 years.

Significantly, it captured the Mayor's post for the first time since Nellore was upgraded as a municipal corporation in 2004.

The victory of TD candidate Poluboina Roop Yadav, who secured a majority of 80,170 votes in the mayoral election, marks a significant political shift in the city's civic administration.

The TD-led alliance also secured a sweeping majority in the 72-division corporation, dealing a major blow to the YSRC.

The TD’s last stint in power in Nellore's civic body dates back to 2000–2005, when Tallapaka Anuradha served as municipal chairperson.

Her husband, T Ramesh Reddy, had also headed the Nellore municipality.

However, the city's elevation as a municipal corporation towards the end of 2004 marked a new chapter in its civic administration, with the Congress taking charge of the newly constituted corporation.

Pulimi Sailaja became the first mayor of Nellore municipal corporation in September 2005.

She was subsequently succeeded by T Bhanusree amid political wranglings within the Congress.

The YSRC captured the corporation in the 2014–19 period, with Shaik Abdul Aziz becoming mayor.

Aziz later switched allegiance to the TD.

The YSRC made a clean sweep in the November 2021 corporation elections, winning all 54 divisions and installing Potluri Sravanthi as Mayor.

The subsequent five-year period witnessed considerable political turbulence and changes in the corporation's leadership.

Sravanthi resigned in December 2025 after a no-confidence motion was initiated against her amid defections of YSRC corporators to the ruling TD.

Deputy mayor Roop Kumar Yadav subsequently served as in-charge mayor before Devarakonda Sujatha was elected mayor in February 2026.

The latest verdict has brought the TDP back to the helm of Nellore's civic administration, ending the YSRC's dominance and marking the beginning of a new chapter in the city's political history.
