SVIMS Performs GPI DBS Procedure On Youth Using Asleep DBS Technique

TIRUMALA: The Neurosurgery department of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (Svims), Tirupati, has performed an advanced bilateral Globus Pallidus Internus Deep Brain Stimulation (GPi DBS) procedure on a 23-year-old patient using the Asleep DBS technique.
The patient is Bokka Naga Satish of Perupalem village in West Godavari district with movement disorder. He underwent the procedure for placement of electrodes without being kept awake.
According to doctors, the technique uses preoperative planning, advanced imaging, precise navigation, and technical guidance to place electrodes in the Globus Pallidus Internus on both sides of the brain. Electrodes are then connected to a stimulator system to provide the required neuromodulation treatment.
The Asleep DBS technique enables the procedure to be performed under anaesthesia without keeping the patient awake for neurological testing during the procedure.
The patient received ₹5 lakh assistance under the TTD Pranadana scheme and another ₹5 lakh from the Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva Trust. SVIMS discharged Naga Satish on Wednesday.
In another case, Svims treated 67-year-old Nagireddy Siddareddy of Uddumallakurthi village in Sri Sathya Sai district for severe neck pain and related problems. Following clinical evaluation and scans, the Neurosurgery team performed the required procedure using advanced medical technology. Siddareddy too has been discharged on Wednesday after recovery. He received ₹5 lakh assistance under the TTD Pranadana scheme.
Svims director and vice-chancellor Dr G. Jagadeesh said the institute ensures that financial constraints do not prevent economically weaker patients from accessing advanced medical treatment. He thanked the TTD management and Dr NTR Vaidya Seva Trust for supporting expensive procedures for poor patients.
The procedures had been performed under the supervision of Neurosurgery department head Dr V.V. Ramesh Chandra and included Dr Manchuri Bhanu Prakash Reddy, Dr Datta Pradeep, Dr Saroj Noel Kappala, Dr D. Satya Sachin, Dr Sona Shekhar Reddy, Dr Anil and Dr Mahesh, apart from staff of Anaesthesia, Nursing, and other departments.
