Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (Svims) on Thursday inaugurated three advanced healthcare facilities valued at around Rs 55 crore, aimed at strengthening cancer, cardiac and neurological treatment services.
The facilities were inaugurated by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) chairman B.R. Naidu under the Sri Balaji Arogyavaraprasadini scheme. The new installations include a PET CT Scan, Gamma Camera and a High Energy Advanced Linear Accelerator.
Speaking to the media after the inauguration, the TTD chairman said the government is taking steps to develop Svims into a premier healthcare institution to provide advanced treatment facilities to people of Rayalaseema at affordable costs. He said the equipment would support early detection and treatment of cancer, cardiac ailments and neurological disorders.
According to him, the PET CT Scan machine, installed at a cost of nearly Rs 18 crore, would help detect cancer and other critical illnesses at an early stage. The Gamma Camera, procured at a cost of Rs 5 crore, would assist in evaluating organ function and tissue abnormalities through imaging technology. He said it would be useful in diagnosing diseases related to the heart, brain, thyroid, kidneys and bones, apart from infections and cancer.
the TTD chairman said the linear accelerator, set up at a cost of Rs 29 crore, would provide precision-based radiation therapy for cancer patients by targeting tumours while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissues. He said it would be particularly useful in treating brain, breast, prostate and lung cancers.
Svims director-cum-vice-chancellor Dr R.V. Kumar said the institution has expanded over three decades with support from TTD. He said medical infrastructure worth nearly Rs 450 crore has been created so far, while construction works worth around Rs 600 crore are underway under the guidance of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Dr Kumar said a dedicated cancer block at Svims would become operational within the next two months. He added that the institution is also planning robotic surgeries, virtual dissection systems and advanced simulation facilities for medical students. He said equipment worth Rs 105 crore has been procured so far through CSR contributions and the Sri Balaji Arogyavaraprasadini scheme.
