Summer Fruits Arrive Early This Year, Bringing to Table Colourful Flavours

Visakhapatnam: Summer fruits have arrived earlier in 2026, even though wintry nights are yet to depart this year.
People across Visakhapatnam have a wider choice of fruits to enjoy, with markets offering mangoes, ice apples, pineapples, watermelons, muskmelons, papayas, and grapes.
Like last year, watermelons are available in new avatars. Though their external colour remains green, the interior fruit is also available in yellow and pink, apart from the traditional red colour.
Watermelon is currently being sold at `50 per kilogramme in traditional markets, with single slices going for `20. Online platforms are offering the fruit at `100 to `150 per piece.
Papaya is available at `40 per kilogramme, while online, it is costing between `50 and `60 per kilogramme.
A prized summer treat locally, ice apples are selling for `80 to ₹90 per dozen at markets like MVP Rythu Bazaar. Kona Rao, a vendor selling ice apples at the bazaar, explained, "Usually, the market price comes down to between `30 and `40 per dozen. Presently, prices are higher, as the season has just started."
Kona Rao disclosed the lesser known shortage of experienced labour. "There are a limited number of workers available who can go up the tall trees and bring down the ice apples. Their payment too is calculated in the pricing,” the vendor stated.
