NELLORE: Nestled atop the scenic Narasimhakonda hill, about 12 km west of Nellore on the southern banks of the sacred Pinakini river, the ancient Vedagiri temple of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy resonated with chants, rituals and devotional fervour as its annual Brahmotsavams commenced on Sunday with the traditional Ankurarpana ceremony.
Temple chairman Indupuru Achyutha Sankar Reddy and executive officer Vemuri Gopi said the celebrations will continue till May 6 in accordance with Vaikhanasa Agama traditions. Special rituals, floral decorations, illumination and cultural programmes have been arranged for devotees during the festival.
Revered as one of the prominent Narasimha kshetras in Andhra Pradesh, the shrine attracts devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Narasimha, regarded as a fierce yet benevolent protector. Temple authorities have invited pilgrims to participate in the festivities, receive theertha prasadam and seek divine grace.
Steeped in mythology, the temple’s origins are linked to references in the Brahmanda Purana. It is believed that the Sapta Maharishis performed sacred yagnas at the site and installed deities at seven holy ponds (konerus), which continue to exist even today. Legend holds that Lord Narasimha appeared in a divine flame (jyoti) to Sage Kashyapa on a Vaishakha evening, adding to the sanctity of the shrine.
Believed to have taken shape more than 1,500 years ago during the Pallava era, the temple is uniquely carved within a cave, lending it rare architectural charm. The site is also linked to epic lore, with local belief suggesting that Ashwathama once took refuge in the surrounding caves.
