Steps Sought To Improve Nagarjuna Sagar Water Supply To Prakasam

The minister held a review meeting with irrigation department officials at his camp office in Turupu Nayudupalem of Tanguturu mandal to assess the status of water releases from Nagarjuna Sagar.

Nellore: Highlighting the need for adequate and timely supply of Nagarjuna Sagar water to Prakasam district, state social welfare minister Dr Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy on Saturday directed irrigation officials to take immediate steps to improve inflows to the district.

The minister held a review meeting with irrigation department officials at his camp office in Turupu Nayudupalem of Tanguturu mandal to assess the status of water releases from Nagarjuna Sagar.

Officials informed him that while 57 TMC of water is due to Prakasam district, only 34 TMC has been received so far. The remaining 23 TMC, they said, is crucial for supplying water to tail-end ayacut areas in the Santhanuthalapadu, Ongole and Kondapi Assembly constituencies.

Officials also raised the need to maintain continuous storage and release of 2,700 cusecs of water at the 85/3-mile point. In response, Dr Swamy spoke to irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu over the phone, seeking his support for timely release of water to Prakasam district. He also contacted Palnadu superintending engineer Venkataratnam and instructed him to ensure uninterrupted water flow.

Addressing the officials, the minister stressed that every tail-end farmer must receive water and asked them to closely monitor field-level conditions. He directed officials to fill summer storage tanks and other water bodies to prevent water scarcity during the summer months and to ensure that paddy and other crops are not affected.

District deputy engineers, executive engineers and assistant executive engineers were present at the review meeting.
