Standard Products Plays A Key In National Development: BIS Chief

Visakhapatnam: Manufacturing products to the highest standards plays a key role in the nation’s development, said Meenakshi Ganesan, deputy director-general (South), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
She inaugurated the Faculty Development Programme on Standardisation and Conformity Assessment, jointly organised by BIS and Andhra University College of Engineering at the Civil Engineering Department seminar hall in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, she said that standards provide strength to institutions and systems. As part of the three-day training, faculty members will be given awareness of Indian and international standards. She recalled that Andhra University signed an MoU with BIS in 2023 and has since conducted various programmes and research projects. She appreciated AU faculty for nurturing talented students. BIS experts would provide in-depth guidance on diverse topics, she added. She stressed that the uniqueness of this FDP lay in its joint collaboration between educational institutions, industries, and BIS.
Andhra University vice-chancellor Prof. G.P. Rajashekar said a course on Standardisation and Conformity Assessment would soon be introduced as part of the curriculum. He emphasised the importance of standards in engineering and expressed satisfaction over the establishment of BIS student chapters in AU.
FDP coordinator Prof. C.N.V. Satyanarayana Reddy said a special section has been created in the library with BIS’s exclusive publications and information resources. He noted that BIS would provide detailed insights into testing, inspection, and certification. He added that over 120 participants had applied for the FDP.
