VIJAYAWADA: Archaeologist and Pleach India Foundation CEO Dr. E. Sivanagi Reddy said a stone inscription of the mighty Vijayanagara Emperor Srikrishnadevaraya has been found gradually sinking into the ground at Durgi mandal headquarters in Palnadu district.
Based on information provided by a local sculptor Ch. Srinivasachary, Dr. Reddy inspected the inscription on the premises of Venkateswara Temple on Friday. He disclosed that it is dated Monday, 22nd November 1518 CE. It had been issued by Timmapa Nayanim, the door keeper of Sri Krishnadevaraya. It records donation of Gundala village situated in Durgi, part of Nagarjunakonda Sima for purposes of anga, ranga bhogas and amritapadi (festivals and offerings) to Gods Vireswara and Vankeswara.
The archaeologist says that the inscription slab contains 55 lines in Telugu language. However, the script of only 19 lines can be seen. The rest 36 lines are illegible because the slab has shrunk into the ground.
In view of the inscription slab’s historical significance, Dr. Sivanagi Reddy appealed to citizens of Durgi and authorities of Venkateswara Temple to preserve it for posterity. The slab must be excavated, erected on a pedestal to its full view and displayed with a signage for the benefit of research scholars and future generations.
