Visakhapatnam: The southwest monsoon set in over Andhra Pradesh (Rayalaseema region) on Monday, arriving nine days ahead of schedule, bringing rain to parts of the Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh. For the second year in a row in the past decade, the monsoon entered the AP region earlier, as the usual date of onset is on June 4. Last year, the monsoon arrived in AP on June 2.
Director of IMD, Andhra Pradesh Stella S. said the southwest monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai; Karnataka, including Bengaluru; remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, some more parts of the west-central and northern Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Mizoram, entire Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, some parts of Assam and Meghalaya on May 26.

It may take four, five, or seven days to spread the monsoon throughout the entire state. The state most likely might experience above-normal monsoon rains in the season, the weather agency added.
The state experienced 21 per cent excess rainfall during the southwest monsoon (June 1 to September 30) in 2024. According to official data, total rainfall reached 629.2 mm, surpassing the average of 521.6 mm. The consistent and widespread monsoon across all districts contributed to increased sowing of kharif crops in 2024.
The state has been receiving thunderstorms since April 24, accelerating the monsoon. In May the state received 3 per cent excess rainfall.
