NELLORE: The state government is committed to completing the Somasila High-Level Canal (HLC) and supplying irrigation water to Marripadu mandal, endowments minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy said on Saturday.

The minister said nearly 68 per cent of the canal works had been completed and the remaining 32 per cent would be taken up to extend irrigation and drinking water benefits to the region. Once completed, the project is expected to fill tanks and streams in the Ponguru, Iskapalli and Pegallapadu areas and benefit several surrounding villages.

Ramanarayana Reddy directed officials to reconstruct a sluice on the Somasila North Canal and take up about 300 metres of canal works to ensure proper water flow, following a request from farmers of Konasamudram.

Earlier, Ramanarayana Reddy laid the foundation stone for reconstruction of the Sri Kodanda Rama Swamy temple at DC Palli (Dharmarao Cheruvu Palli), taken up with `1 crore from the endowments department funds.

He said more than `8.12 crore had already been sanctioned for the development and reconstruction of temples in Marripadu mandal, including around 15 temples, 11 Srivani temples and three other temples. The government is also providing monthly financial assistance to 21 temples for daily rituals.

At the state level, a `1,100-crore worth plan has been prepared to develop around 800 temples over two years, he added.
