Nellore: A police constable of Eagle Team was injured after a ganja smuggler attempted to run over police officers with his car during an interception on NH-16 near SVGS College Grounds on Sunday morning. However, Balaji Nagar police opened fire in self-defense, arrested the accused and seized 22 kg of ganja being smuggled to Nellore city and the car.
The accused, identified as Beeraka Prakash alias Surya Prakash, 51, of Krishna Nagar, Rajahmundry, was transporting the contraband in a Maruti Swift Dzire (AP 10 AY 5649) from Alluri Sitarama Raju district agency area to supply it to local peddlers.
When the police team, acting on a tip-off, tried to stop the car, the accused sped towards them, hitting constable Feroz of the Eagle Team, who sustained a fractured tooth and bleeding hand injuries.
In retaliation, circle inspector K. Sambasiva Rao fired two rounds from his service pistol, bringing the vehicle to a halt and enabling the arrest. Police seized the car along with the contraband.
Police said that Prakash is a repeat offender with multiple cases under NDPS Act and IPC registered in East Godavari, Eluru, and Nellore districts. He is also on the suspect sheet at Jeelugumilli police station in Eluru district.

The operation was coordinated by Additional SP (Admin) Ch. Soujanya and DSP (Town) P. Sindhu Priya.
Police urged citizens to report illegal drug activities to Eagle Cell helpline 1972, assuring that informants’ identities will be kept confidential.
