Visakhapatnam:In a proactive effort to enhance security awareness, the Visakhapatnam district administration on Wednesday coordinated efforts for a blackout drill at Lamsam Oxygen Tower, the well-known skyscraper in Seethammadhara.
Organised in partnership with its flat owners welfare association, the drill was conducted at night to prepare residents for potential emergency scenarios, including terrorist attacks.
The blackout drill was part of a broader civil mock drill designed to simulate real-world crisis situations. The association held an informative meeting earlier in the day, briefing residents on safety protocols.
The skyscraper complex comprises 680 flats, of which 580 are occupied. During the drill, the skyscraper's power was deliberately shut off for 15 minutes, simulating a complete blackout. This exercise was intended to help residents understand how to react during unexpected terrorist attacks or war situations.
“We raised the alarm in the building at 6:58pm, as instructed by the district administration, and spent 15 minutes in total darkness,” said BVG Sudhakar, vice-president of the association.
Some residents reflected on past experiences, citing memories of the Indo-Pakistan War 1971. A long-time resident who chose to remain anonymous said, “Having witnessed the realities of war, we are closely monitoring the present situation. This drill reinforced the importance of preparedness, especially given Visakhapatnam’s strategic significance.”
Officials said similar civil mock drills would continue in key residential and commercial areas across the city.
