Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has ordered a probe by constituting a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Vijayawada CID DSP Mohan, to investigate the 2022 assault on then Palacole MLA and current Minister for Water Resources, Nimmala Ramanaidu, in West Godavari district.
The CID Director General of Police issued orders in this regard on Thursday.
The incident occurred during a TIDCO housing distribution programme held by the then YSR Congress government in Palacole. Ministers Adimulapu Suresh, Karumuri Nageswara Rao, Kottu Satyanarayana, and then Narasapuram MLA Mudunuri Prasada Raju were present. As per protocol, local MLA Ramanaidu was to preside over the meeting. He and MLC Angara Ramamohan arrived at the venue and began climbing the stage when YSR Congress supporters and others allegedly attacked them. A button knife was recovered from the attackers, and those who attempted to protect Ramanaidu were also assaulted.
Despite Ramanaidu lodging complaints with the local police, DGP, SP, and Collector, and a separate complaint from then Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu, no case was initially registered. Instead, cases were reportedly filed against the victims of the assault.
Following the change in government in 2024, the Narasapuram DSP registered a case based on Ramanaidu’s original complaint. The investigation revealed the attack was premeditated, involving deadly weapons, and that Ramanaidu narrowly escaped serious harm.
In light of these findings, the state government has initiated a thorough CID probe through the SIT.
