Sankranti Games To Steer Youth Away From Illegal Activities

The initiative aims to divert youth from activities such as gambling and cockfights

Vijayawada: In a bid to promote healthy recreation and discourage illegal activities during the Sankranti festival, the Bharata Yuvajana Sangham, a youth welfare association, will organise a series of traditional games and sports events in Penamakuru village of Thotlavalluru mandal in Krishna district from January 12 to 15.

Association president M. Yohana said the initiative aims to divert youth from activities such as gambling and cockfights during the festive season and encourage their participation in organised sports and cultural programmes.
Kabaddi matches will be held on January 12 and 13, with teams from Penamakuru and neighbouring villages expected to participate. Children’s events, including musical chairs, running races and a cycle slow-riding competition, will be conducted on January 14 to ensure active involvement of youngsters. A rangoli competition highlighting traditional festive art and creativity will be organised on January 15.
The programme will conclude with a prize distribution ceremony on January 16 in Penamakuru village. In addition to prizes for winners of the various events, the association will also honour academic achievers. “As in previous years, cash rewards will be presented to students who secure the top three ranks in Class X at the ZP High School in Penamakuru village,” Yohana said.
He added that such community-led initiatives help foster discipline, sportsmanship and social responsibility among youth while preserving the cultural spirit of Sankranti in a positive manner.
