APSRTC to Install Panic Buttons in Buses Following Supreme Court Directive

While APSRTC’s fleet of around 11,000 buses is already equipped with GPS-enabled tracking systems through Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) ticket vending machines, the corporation now plans to add emergency panic buttons across its passenger vehicles.

Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) will install panic buttons in all its buses in compliance with a recent directive issued by the Supreme Court of India mandating GPS tracking systems and emergency alert buttons in all public service vehicles to improve passenger safety.

While APSRTC’s fleet of around 11,000 buses is already equipped with GPS-enabled tracking systems through Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) ticket vending machines, the corporation now plans to add emergency panic buttons across its passenger vehicles.

The EPOS machines, operated by drivers or conductors depending on the type of bus, are currently used for multiple functions including live bus tracking, ticket issuance, advance reservation and digital payments. RTC authorities said the system also enables the Central Communication Cell at the APSRTC headquarters to monitor bus speed, track locations and analyse accident-related data.

APSRTC Executive Director (Operations) M.Y. Danam said the corporation was working on plans to install emergency buttons in every bus to allow passengers to raise alarms during emergencies or unsafe situations.

Transport department officials said installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs) will become mandatory for all new public service vehicles from January 1, 2026. The requirement will also apply to older vehicles from May 1, 2026, at the time of renewal of fitness certificates.

Officials added that panic buttons would enable passengers to alert bus staff, RTC authorities and police during emergencies such as accidents, ensuring faster response and rescue operations.
