YSR Kadapa: Work to widen another key national highway in Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh is picking up pace. As per reports the Kadapa–Renigunta section of the Kadapa–Chennai highway (National Highway-716) is being upgraded from two lanes to four as a greenfield highway, which is expected to cut travel time and ease pressure on a route that has become increasingly congested. The journey from Kadapa to Renigunta, which currently takes about four hours, is expected to come down to around two hours once the highway is ready.
The stretch covers 122 km and is estimated to cost Rs 2,254 crore. The four-lane road will pass through Kadapa, Bhakarapeta, Vontimitta, Rajampet, Pullampeta, Obulavaripalle, Railway Koduru and Mamandur before reaching Renigunta.
The widening was considered necessary because traffic on the Kadapa–Chennai route has grown steadily over the years. Nearly 50 km of road between Railway Koduru and Renigunta is in poor condition. The route also cuts through the Seshachalam forest and has several dangerous curves, which have led to frequent accidents.
The Centre approved the project in 2021,and was revived in June 2024, and construction began in October 2025 with a target of finishing within two years. Officials say forest clearances, release of funds, land acquisition and compensation payments have all been completed. Work has now picked up speed in Kadapa district, while tree clearing is under way on forest land between Railway Koduru and Renigunta.
Once open, the highway is expected to benefit public transport, agriculture and trade, and to make travel easier for people heading to Tirupati and Chennai. The government has set a target of completing the greenfield highway by 2027.
