RMC Road Widening: Railways Not Giving Land To Municipal Corporation

The RMC wants to widen the roads to the east and west railway stations.

Kakinada:The Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation’s attempts to widen roads and reduce traffic congestion near the railway station areas remain stalled due to non-cooperation from the railway authorities.

Some time ago, the civic body made the proposal and gave an alternative space and TDR bonds to the railways. The expectation was that it would be given some railway land near the main station. The issue, however, is dragging.

The RMC wants to widen the roads to the east and west railway stations. It proposed to widen the west station side from the present 15 feet to 25 feet from the government junior college junction to the five fruits market at a length of 1km to 1.5 km. As of now, the road is narrow. By the time of the Pushkaralu-2027, it would become a major roadblock, if the widening is not done by then.

In discussions, the railways had agreed to give up some land as proposed by the civic body. Based on this promise, the RMC parted with 4,000 sq.metres of site to the railways as compensation.

On the Eastern side, the road is narrow and travel is difficult at peak hours. RMC proposed to widen the road from 60ft to 80ft and it issued TDR bonds to the Railways for this purpose. RMC officials said that though repeated letters were sent to the railways, the department did not show a willingness to keep up its promise and hand over the site to the civic body.

Former MP, M Bharat, told Deccan Chronicle that when he was a parliamentarian, he took up the issue and the proposals were approved by the railways. Alternative sites and TDR bonds were issued to the railways. “If the widening process is completed, passenger traffic would become easy and motorists can move around freely. Otherwise, the frequent traffic jams would continue.”

He alleged that the alliance government and its leaders failed to intervene and facilitate the handover of the sites from the railways.

Meanwhile, the present local MP, D Purandeswari, recently called on the SCR general manager Sanjay Kumar

Srivastav and urged him to expedite the railway station development works and sort out other issues.

Meanwhile, East Godavari district collector P Prashanthi inspected the storm drain works at Veerabhadrapuram and toilet works from Hanuman Temple to Seethampeta area. She advised engineering officials to expedite the work.
