Reservoirs in Kadapa Near Full Capacity as Cyclone Rains Boost Inflows

Sources said 72 TMC ft of water is currently available in 13 irrigation projects in the erstwhile Kadapa district, against a full storage capacity of 83 TMC ft

ANANTAPUR: In view of incessant rains, reservoirs in Kadapa district have reached near full storage capacity, and irrigation authorities have been directed to utilise additional inflows from the cyclone rains to fill irrigation tanks in dependent areas.

Sources said 72 TMC ft of water is currently available in 13 irrigation projects in the erstwhile Kadapa district, against a full storage capacity of 83 TMC ft. The Gandikota reservoir holds 26.2 TMC ft against its 26.8 TMC ft full capacity, with excess water being discharged downstream towards Mylavaram dam. Similarly, the Brahma Sagar reservoir is nearing full capacity, with 15.2 TMC ft stored against a total of 17.7 TMC ft, irrigation officials said.

The Chitravati Balancing Reservoir (CBR), which serves both Anantapur and Kadapa districts, is being maintained at 9 TMC ft against its full capacity of 10.2 TMC ft. The Mylavaram reservoir is also nearing full storage at 6 TMC ft, and water is being released downstream into the Pennar river.

Irrigation authorities have been instructed to divert additional water from cyclone inflows to nearby irrigation tanks through channels and riverbeds to prevent crop losses and optimise water use.

The Kadapa and Annamayya district administrations have alerted irrigation teams to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.

In Anantapur district, water from the Bhyravani Thippa project in Rayadurg Assembly constituency was released after steady inflows from the Vedavathi river originating in Karnataka. The dam authorities lifted two gates to allow the water to flow into local tanks.
