Hyderabad's celebrated magician and illusionist Samala Venu
IMA has conferred its Lifetime Achievement (Golden Magician Award) on Hyderabad's celebrated magician and illusionist Samala Venu on the International Magicians Day organised in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
The 58-year-old performer, who began his magical journey with a 50-rupee show during his school holidays in 1980, has since enchanted audiences with over 7,000 performances across India and in more than 30 countries. A graduate in science with a master's degree in public relations, Venu has seamlessly blended artistry with education throughout his career.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle after receiving the IMA Lifetime Achievement Award, Venu recalled his remarkable feats, including a record-breaking 36-hour nonstop magic performance in 1990 and a 17-day blindfolded scooter journey covering 23 districts of undivided Andhra Pradesh, including the challenging Tirumala Ghat Road.
His magic includes spectacular illusions, such as the classic "cutting the lady in four pieces," levitation, body floating and vanishing acts, apart from his signature "Water of India" performance.
Samala Venu is the only Indian magician to receive the prestigious Merlin Award twice from the International Magicians Society (USA) in 2014 and 2015.
His contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the National Youth Award from the Government of India (1993), various state honours from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments, and international recognition at the Quebec City Magic Competition. He holds the unique distinction of being the first Indian magician selected for Rotary International's 45-day Group Study Exchange Programme as a Cultural Ambassador to Brazil.
Currently, Samala Venu is a cultural ambassador for Telangana Tourism.
