Red Sanders Smuggler Injured In Police Firing In Kadapa

KADAPA: A suspected red sanders smuggler was injured after police allegedly opened fire when he attempted to attack personnel during a vehicle check near Duvvur in Mydukur Assembly constituency of Kadapa district.
The incident occurred when police personnel intercepted S. Zakir during checks in the Duvvur area. He was reportedly wanted in several red sanders smuggling cases. Police said Zakir resisted arrest and allegedly attacked personnel while they were trying to take him into custody.
Police said they opened fire to prevent the alleged attack, injuring Zakir. He was overpowered and shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) hospital in Kadapa for treatment.
Police said several cases had previously been registered against Zakir in connection with red sanders smuggling.
On September 23, police arrested nine alleged red sanders smugglers in three separate cases and seized 87 red sanders logs weighing around 1.810 tonnes. Five vehicles allegedly used for transporting the logs were also seized.
Following the arrests and increased surveillance, several smugglers were reportedly attempting to evade arrest. Zakir was reportedly identified during intensified checks near Duvvur.
Police maintained security at the ward where Zakir was undergoing treatment at RIMS. His present health condition was not immediately known.
