Reactor Eruption Injures Worker At Parawada Pharmacity Unit

Ramu was initially treated at a local clinic and shifted to a private hospital in Arilova, Visakhapatnam, on Friday for advanced treatment.

Visakhapatnam:A worker suffered severe burns after material reportedly erupted from a reactor at the Novo Four pharmaceutical plant in Parawada Pharmacity on Thursday. The incident prompted the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) to demand an inquiry and action against the management.

Yellapu Ramu, 48, a helper from Patipalli village in Munagapaka mandal, sustained burns to his eyes and other parts of his body during the ‘B’ shift. The material involved was identified as CSP (cast sulpher product).

Ramu was initially treated at a local clinic and shifted to a private hospital in Arilova, Visakhapatnam, on Friday for advanced treatment.

CITU leader Gani Shetti Satyanarayana, honorary president of the Pharmacity Staff and Workers’ Union, visited the plant on Friday to gather details of the accident. He alleged that Ramu had received only preliminary medical attention despite the severity of his injuries.

Satyanarayana demanded a thorough investigation and criminal action against the management over alleged safety lapses and its handling of the incident. He also alleged that the company had attempted to conceal the accident and failed to inform district authorities promptly.

He urged the authorities to ensure the best possible treatment for Ramu and demanded that the company bear all medical expenses, provide adequate compensation and pay his full wages until his recovery.

Calling for stricter enforcement of safety protocols across pharmaceutical units in Pharmacity, Satyanarayana said he would submit a formal complaint to the district collector seeking an official inquiry and action against those responsible.
