Rare Brain Surgery Saves Day-Old Infant in Nellore
Giving the infant a new lease on life

Nellore: In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at a private hospital in Nellore successfully performed a rare, life-saving brain surgery on a one-day-old newborn, giving the infant a new lease on life.
The baby had been rushed to the hospital on March 25 with a massive, life-threatening brain haemorrhage on the right side, sustained during birth at another private hospital. The condition triggered seizures, loss of consciousness, and severe neurological distress. CT scan revealed critical pressure on vital brain structures, leaving survival chances extremely slim.
With no time to shift the infant to another city, neurosurgeon Dr. Venkat of Apollo Speciality Hospitals and his team took up the high-risk challenge. In what is said to be a first-of-its-kind procedure in Nellore, doctors performed an emergency decompressive craniectomy and removed the blood clots.
Operating on a newborn posed severe risks, including blood loss, hypothermia, cardiac complications, and even death on the table. A coordinated effort by paediatricians and anaesthetists ensured the delicate procedure went on smoothly and successfully.
Post-surgery, the infant has shown steady recovery, leading to weaning off ventilator support. The baby is feeding normally, is active, with no signs of paralysis or neurological deficits. The infant has been discharged in stable condition.
Doctors underlined that such surgeries are extremely rare, with very low survival rates documented in medical literature. The parents expressed immense relief and joy over their child’s recovery.
Those involved in the critical procedure include hospital’s Medical Services director Dr. Sriram Satish, paediatricians Dr. Rajasekhar, Dr. Mohammed Rafi, and Dr. Bharath, anaesthesiology head Dr. Raja Mohan Reddy and their teams.
