Raptadu Attack: Doctors Amputate Assailant’s Right Leg Above Knee

Doctors amputate the accused’s right leg after gangrene develops from gunshot injuries sustained during a police operation in Anantapur.

Doctors at Anantapur Government General Hospital amputated the right leg of the accused in the power saw attack on a Class X student at Raptadu Zilla Parishad High School late on Monday after gangrene developed due to the gunshot injuries he received last week.

Doctors said the accused developed gangrene due to severely reduced blood circulation. The procedure was performed after midnight following the necessary clearances, while the accused remained in police custody.

Doctors decided to remove the affected tissue to prevent the infection from spreading and threatening his life, police said. They also operated on his left leg, which had sustained serious injuries during the police firing. After the operation, the accused was shifted to the acute medical care unit and placed in a separate room for security reasons.

Student organisations, villagers and members of the public had expressed anger over the possibility of the accused being attacked inside the hospital. “We shifted him to the first floor to avoid unnecessary disturbance for other patients”, a doctor told Deccan Chronicle.

The accused’s condition was stated to be stable. He had sustained bullet injuries to both legs when the police tracked him down in the Atmakur reserved forest area on Sunday evening.

As per the police version, he attempted to attack a CI with a knife during the operation to apprehend him.
