Rally against drug abuse in Vizag
Visakhapatnam: The Union ministry of social Justice and empowerment has launched a new initiative to raise awareness about the perils of drug abuse and its harmful effects on individuals and society. As part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan programme, a rally was held in the city on Saturday.
In his opening remarks, district collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad urged the youth to steer clear of drug use and instead focus on building a brighter future. He highlighted the severe consequences of addiction, describing cannabis as an epidemic that significantly contributes to crime in society. He called upon college and university students to become ambassadors of change and actively work towards combating this issue.
Prasad further emphasised the need for increased vigilance regarding the supply and transportation of cannabis, assuring the public that the government is committed to eradicating this problem.
Addressing the rally, city police commissioner Sankhabrata Bhagchi, stating that addiction encompasses not only cannabis but all forms of intoxicants. He pointed out that drug use and trafficking have escalated into a national crisis. The commissioner cautioned the youth against viewing substance use as a fashionable choice, noting that many individuals who succumb to addiction later express regret and recognise the negative impact on their families.
He shared that numerous parents have reached out to him for guidance, underscoring the urgent need for support. Commissioner Bhagchi encouraged everyone to utilise rehabilitation services and to help spread awareness about the dangers of addiction.
