Vijayawada: Underlining public responsibility and personal commitment, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Wednesday visited Ippatam in Mangalagiri constituency, honouring a promise he made to an elderly woman who fiercely stood up against demolition of houses during the previous YSRC regime.
The Deputy CM warmly embraced Indla Nageswaramma on arrival, calling himself her elder son, inquiring about her health and wellbeing, and assuring her his continued support. “I have come for you Amma, keeping my word,” he told her. Pawan Kalyan postponed official engagements to visit Nageswaramma.
The elderly woman had come into the public eye during the demolition of houses in Ippatam, when she fearlessly resisted the action. She told officials undertaking demolitions that Pawan Kalyan would stand by her. The then JS chief visited the village, reassured residents and promised to return and meet Nageswaramma after the elections—an assurance he fulfilled on Wednesday.
The Deputy Chief Minister gifted the elderly woman a saree for Sankranti and extended ₹50,000 towards household expenses. Noting that she still worked in fields for earning her livelihood, Pawan Kalyan announced that ₹5,000 will be sent to her every month from his own salary for her upkeep. In addition, he sanctioned ₹1 lakh for the education of her differently-abled grandson Manoj Sai. He facilitated sanction of ₹3 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for cancer treatment of her son Kondaiah.
Pawan interacted closely with villagers along the route in Kolanukonda and Ippatam, who welcomed him with a shower of flowers. He spoke to farm labourers, listened to their grievances, ordered immediate installation of an electricity pole on a resident’s request, and directed officials to address pending pension issues.
MLC and government whip in State Legislative Council Pidugu Hariprasad said the Deputy CM fulfilling his promise to Nageswaramma and visiting the village again reflects Pawan Kalyan’s enduring bond with Ippatam. Hariprasad recalled that when the then YSRC government refused permission for Jana Sena Foundation Day meeting in Ippatam in 2022, villagers had allowed the meeting on their land. They later faced reprisals for doing so.
Those present during the Deputy Chief Minister’s visit included several public representatives and officials.
