Power Generation at Srisailam Raises Concern

Avinash Reddy said continued drawal of water for power generation could bring the reservoir level down to around 854 ft.

KADAPA: Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy has urged the state government to accord top priority to drinking water and irrigation requirements while utilising water from the Srisailam reservoir.

In a letter to water resources department principal secretary Sashi Bhushan Kumar, Avinash Reddy said the situation was a matter of concern as inflows into the Srisailam reservoir had declined sharply.

The reservoir’s water level was around 876.5 ft, with about 170.6 TMC of water available, he said. Despite the declining inflows, Telangana Genco was reportedly utilising around 40,955 cusecs of water daily for power generation.

Avinash Reddy said continued drawal of water for power generation could bring the reservoir level down to around 854 ft. At that level, it would become difficult to draw water from the reservoir, potentially resulting in drought-like conditions, he said.

He said there was a risk of disruption to drinking water and irrigation systems, including Telugu Ganga, KC Canal and GNSS, if the reservoir level fell further.

The Kadapa MP also urged the authorities to immediately release at least 5,000 cusecs of water into the Kundu river to meet the drinking water requirements of people in the region.
