Poor Water Management Causing Hardship To Farmers: Kakani
Kakani Govardhan Reddy alleged poor water management is leaving crops on thousands of acres in Nellore district without adequate irrigation.
Former minister and YSRC Nellore district president Kakani Govardhan Reddy on Monday alleged that poor water management by the coalition government was leaving crops on thousands of acres in the district without adequate water.
During his visit to Podalakur and Marupur, Govardhan Reddy said crops on 3,600–4,000 acres in Kanupurupalli, Nookanapalli, Yadanaparthi, Verubotlapalli and Gopavaram villages were facing severe water shortage. He urged officials to release irrigation water immediately to protect the standing crops.
Govardhan Reddy said water from the Somasila south feeder canal was reaching only up to Nagulavellaturu and not the downstream areas. He claimed that releasing water through the Somasila-Kandaleru flood-flow canal could help fill the Kaluvayi and Kulluru tanks.
He demanded that water be immediately diverted from the Srisailam reservoir to Somasila, alleging that the government had ignored the issue despite repeated appeals over the past 10 days. He said Somasila had only around 16 TMC of water, of which about 8 TMC was usable.
Govardhan Reddy announced a protest at the Nellore Barrage at 10 am on Tuesday, with former minister Sake Sailajanath expected to participate. He also criticised the government over pension rules and alleged that no new pensions had been sanctioned in 27 months.
