Vijayawada:Andhra Pradesh will soon have a Police Sports Academy to provide professional training, modern equipment and advanced infrastructure to police personnel.

As part of this initiative, the state police signed a memorandum of understanding with VIT-AP University, Amaravati, announced DGP Harish Kumar Gupta here on Friday. He unveiled the academy’s official logo.

Speaking at the valedictory of the state police sports and games meet-2026 at the APSP 6th Battalion in Mangalagiri, Gupta stressed the need for unity within the force.

“Though ranks and postings differ, we are all members of one team — the AP Police family. Working in coordination will help us serve the public better,” he said.

Nearly 1,900 police athletes from 15 divisions participated in the four-day meet. Gupta described it as the first event of its scale in the state and congratulated the medal winners. He urged other participants to train harder.

“Victory brings joy, defeat teaches us lessons. Accepting both equally is the true spirit of sports,” he said.

Gupta said the changing nature of crime made physical fitness important for police officers in dealing with future challenges. He encouraged personnel to make sports part of their professional lives and expressed hope that AP athletes would win medals at the All India Police Games.

He promised full support from the government and the police department for women personnel in sports. “Women are excelling in every field. Our women athletes will shine at state and national levels with complete encouragement,” he said.

Visakhapatnam Range emerged as the overall champion in both the men’s and women’s categories. Prizes were distributed to outstanding performers at the closing ceremony.

The event was attended by senior police officials.
