Police Form Anti-Drugs Panels In Schools And Colleges

Welfare schemes to be stopped for farmers who cultivate ganja - Police

ADILABAD: The police in Adilabad and Nirmal police are on a special drive to control ganja cultivation and its illegal sale and transportation of ganja to the district. As part of this, the Adilabad police would form anti-drugs committees in schools and colleges.

Villagers have been warned that they would lose the benefits of various welfare schemes if they are found guilty of cultivating ganja in their fields.

The Adilabad police are creating awareness against ganja and drugs in the interior villages under the Police Meekosam endeavour and donating sports kits to the youths to also divert their attention from bad habits.

Ganja cigarettes are reportedly being sold in some pan shops in Nirmal. The police use the special detection kits to identify those who consumed ganja. They conducted raids in the interior villages and seized ganja plants.

Cops said they are creating awareness among the Adivasis against the cultivation of ganja as an intercrop alongside red gram in their fields in interior villages.

The Adilabad police registered 50 ganja-related cases this year and seized 26kg of dry ganja and 230 ganja plants in the district. The cops conducted raids on four agriculture fields in Salyada village in Ichoda and seized 180 ganja plants.

The police also seized 30 ganja plants from an agriculture field in Tamsi (K) village in Bheempur mandal last month.

Adilabad SP, Akhil Mahajan, said they would constitute anti-drug committees with students, teachers, police and parents in schools and colleges after they reopen. “Welfare schemes would be stopped for the farmers who cultivate ganja.”

“We would also keep a close watch on the movement of strangers near schools and colleges, who might induce students into ganja and drug use in various forms,” he said.

In an incident, the police caught four persons while selling ganja in the cattle market in Nirmal town and seized 1200 grams of it from their possession. Cases have been booked against them on May 18.

On May 21, Nirmal police brought two persons before the local tehasildar on the charges of selling ganja in Vishwanathpet in Nirmal. They were a student of Gudampelli village and a mechanic of Bhainsa town.

Police found that a gang of four criminals were bringing ganja from Kinwat, bordering Maharashtra and selling these for a higher price in Nirmal.
