VIJAYAWADA: A potentially tragic incident at Suryalanka Beach in Bapatla district ended on a positive note on Sunday after local and marine police personnel displayed remarkable courage and presence of mind in rescuing an 18-year-old youth from getting sucked into the sea due to rip currents.

According to police, Kummarigunta Karthik (18) of Ponnur had ventured into the sea for a bath at around 7 a.m. Powerful waves dragged him into deeper waters. As the youth struggled and cried for help, police personnel stationed at the beach outpost, along with marine police teams, sprang into action.

Without regard for their own safety, the rescuers entered the sea using life jackets and life buoys. They succeeded in bringing Karthik back to shore, administered first aid to him, and handed him over to his companions.

Visitors at the beach appreciated the swift response of the police. They expressed gratitude for the stringent safety measures put in place under the supervision of Bapatla superintendent of police B. Umamaheshwar.

The SP has asked tourists visiting coastal areas to strictly avoid venturing beyond the designated safe depth. He pointed out that sea currents can change suddenly. In particular, he cautioned people from entering the sea after consuming alcohol.
