New Diaphragm Wall works begin at Polavaram project

Kakinada: Construction of a new diaphragm wall for the Polavaram Irrigation Project began on Saturday, a significant milestone in the project’s history. The new wall, costing ₹990 crore, will span 1.396 kilometres with a thickness of 1.5 metres. It is scheduled for completion by December 2025 using three cutters, with one currently operational.

The earlier diaphragm wall, built during the Telugu Desam government’s tenure, was declared "damaged" under the previous YSRC government, halting major works for three years. The alliance government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has resumed work, constructing the new wall 6 metres upstream of the old one.
Polavaram Project Chief Engineer C. Narasimha Murthy inaugurated the works with traditional poojas. He credited the Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu for their efforts. The Central Water Commission approved the wall design on January 13, and permissions for the T5 Mix were granted on January 16.

The second cutter will begin by January-end, with a third by February-end, ensuring steady progress despite rainy seasons. Project Deputy Engineer Padmanabha Rao and other officials attended the launch.
