PM Modi to Dedicate Redeveloped Sullurpeta Railway Station to the Nation

Situated strategically near the Andhra-Tamil Nadu border, Sullurpeta is a significant transit hub on the Chennai–Vijayawada route, with 42 express trains and 28 EMU services passing through daily

Tirupati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the redeveloped Sullurpeta Railway Station in the Tirupati parliamentary constituency to the nation on Thursday, as part of the Indian Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The station, located in Tirupati district, has been upgraded with improved passenger amenities and infrastructure at a cost of around Rs.14.5 crore.

Situated strategically near the Andhra-Tamil Nadu border, Sullurpeta is a significant transit hub on the Chennai–Vijayawada route, with 42 express trains and 28 EMU services passing through daily. Categorised under the NSG-5 (Non-Suburban Grade-5) group, the station handles more than 9,000 passengers per day. The town also holds strategic importance, being only 18 km from Isro’s launch site at Sriharikota and home to the historic Chengalamma Temple, where Isro scientists are known to visit before every satellite launch. The region is also close to the Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary and Pulicat Lake.

In line with the government’s ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’ aimed at modernising railway infrastructure across the country, Sullurpeta was selected for comprehensive redevelopment. The revamped station now boasts a traditional architectural facade with state-of-the-art features including a high-tech reservation centre, energy-efficient lighting, modern seating, new platforms, lifts for inter-platform access, and upgraded water and sanitation facilities. Facilities for differently-abled passengers have been incorporated as part of the redevelopment.

“The transformation is so complete that from the outside, it resembles a small airport,” noted a senior Gati Shakti official, who oversaw the redevelopment. “We ensured that the station meets both present and future needs while also offering a pleasant travel experience.”

Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy noted that he had approached the Union railway minister multiple times regarding the station’s development, based on requests from the local public. “This is a proud moment for the people of Sullurpeta. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for recognising the importance of this town and investing in its future,” he said.
