Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted how India's traditional crafts, particularly the Narsapuram lace craft, are driving economic growth and social empowerment. He praised the lace craft as a "symbol of patience and intricate artistry," noting that generations of women artisans have sustained this heritage through their dedication. To modernise the sector, the Andhra Pradesh government, with NABARD's backing, is providing skill training, introducing contemporary designs, and improving market connections.
The Narsapuram lace industry has achieved significant milestones, including securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which enhances its brand identity and market value. The sector now employs nearly one lakh women across over 250 villages and produces more than 500 varieties of lace products.
The Prime Minister likened the craft's progress to an "old, sturdy tree branching out with renewed strength," emphasising that supporting traditional skills with modern opportunities can create sustainable livelihoods for rural communities nationwide.
