PM Highlights Andhra’s Mango Legacy, Praises Suvarnarekha in Mann Ki Baat
Among the varieties Modi referred to, Suvarnarekha occupies a special place in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the coastal districts of north Andhra.

Vijayawada: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday cited Andhra Pradesh’s rich mango heritage during the 134th episode of Mann Ki Baat, highlighting the state’s famed mango varieties and their contribution to India’s agricultural identity and global reputation.
Speaking about the summer season and India’s traditional food culture, the PM said mangoes continued to hold a special place in households. Referring to the remarkable diversity of mangoes grown in different regions, he cited Andhra Pradesh’s celebrated Suvarnarekha and Banganapalli varieties, besides the Totapuri, Neelam and Malgova cultivated across south India.
Modi noted that every region added a unique flavour to India’s mango legacy. “As the place changes, the mango’s appearance, colour and taste also change,” he observed, describing the fruit as a symbol of the country’s cultural and agricultural diversity.
Among the varieties he referred to, Suvarnarekha occupies a special place in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the coastal districts of north Andhra. Popularly known as Sundari, Chinna Suvarnarekha or Lal Sundari, the mango derives its name from the Sanskrit term meaning “Golden Line”.
This mango is easily recognised by its golden-yellow skin marked with a distinctive reddish blush near the stalk, making it one of the most visually attractive mangoes grown in the state.
Known for its bright yellow, juicy and largely fibreless pulp, Suvarnarekha is prized for its sweetness, rich aroma and strong market demand. The early-season variety, available from April to June, is also considered an important export-oriented cultivar by the state horticulture authorities.
The PM praised mango growers for strengthening the agricultural economy and expanding the global reach of Indian produce. He also highlighted traditional summer beverages such as Panakam, Neer Mor and Sambaram, describing them as examples of India’s rich culinary heritage and the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”.
Besides agriculture, Modi spoke about achievements in athletics, conservation, astronomy, heritage preservation and community-led initiatives, urging citizens to draw inspiration from such positive developments and contribute to nation-building.
