Kurnool: The Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) has launched a strict crackdown on pig rearing within city limits, responding to rising public health concerns and legal directives.
The growing pig population, especially in the city’s outskirts, has long created sanitation hazards and contributed to vector-borne diseases such as dengue. Despite repeated complaints from residents—who reported pigs roaming freely, entering gated communities and snatching vegetable bags—civic action remained limited for years. In one disturbing incident, over 9,000 pigs reportedly died under mysterious circumstances in the city a few years ago.
Acting on public pressure and directives from the Andhra Pradesh High Court and G.O. No. 323, which bans pig rearing within municipal areas, the corporation is enforcing a mandatory 5 km buffer between pig farms and city limits. As part of the effort, 4.15 acres have been identified at Bastipadu village in Kallur mandal for relocation. Pig rearers have been invited to inspect and consider the site for relocation.
Commissioner S. Ravindra Babu said pig farming within urban limits is not only illegal but also a serious environmental and safety risk, particularly for children and motorists. He said the civic body would develop facilities at the relocation site. Civic officials said pig farmers will be encouraged to voluntarily relocate or exit the profession. Support will be extended for alternative self-employment options and subsidies under government schemes for those willing to shift.
As per regulations, pig owners must secure licences from the municipal corporation and tag their pigs, similar to pet dog identification norms. Vaccination and containment are mandatory. Authorities also retain the right to seize or cull pigs found in residential areas if they pose a health risk, in line with a 1986 AP High Court ruling obtained by Guntur Municipal Corporation, mandating the removal of pigs from human settlements. With technical clearances secured, Kurnool authorities say they are committed to enforcing the rules to improve urban hygiene and help affected families transition to safer livelihoods.
