VIJAYAWADA: In the face of severe flooding in north Andhra districts caused by heavy rains and swollen rivers, Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has asked officials of Panchayati Raj, Rural Development, and the Rural Water Supply (RWS) departments to work in close coordination and mitigate the impact of floods in the affected villages.
Presiding over a review meeting with officials on Friday at his camp office, he took stock of the current flood situation and the damage to crops due to heavy rains and the impact of cyclone.
Officials informed the Deputy CM that flow of floodwaters from Odisha had been heavier than expected. This led to excess inflow into key projects like Srikakulam’s Gotta Barrage and Vamsadhara River schemes. District administration evacuated residents from low-lying areas and shifted them to safer locations.
Appreciating the officials, Pawan Kalyan emphasised on the need to prevent health hazards in the flood-affected areas by ensuring good sanitation, which would help control the outbreak of diseases. He suggested that, if required, sanitation staff could be mobilised from the neighbouring districts.
The Deputy CM instructed RWS officials to ensure uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water by working with military-like discipline and to provide.
He directed all officials concerned to continuously monitor the ground situation in the villages, maintain inter-departmental coordination, and actively participate in relief measures.
Pawan Kalyan asked officials to regularly update him about the impact of floods and the relief measures being carried out.
