Vijayawada: Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has directed officials to begin evacuating people from vulnerable areas to rehabilitation centres in advance, with special focus on pregnant women, lactating mothers, and the elderly, in view of Cyclone Montha, which is expected to make landfall near Kakinada coast.

The Deputy Chief Minister held a review meeting via video conference on Monday with the Minister for Municipal Administration (in charge of Kakinada district) and district officials. He stressed that district authorities must remain accessible to the public round the clock in all 12 vulnerable mandals and ensure that there is no loss of life.

Pawan instructed officials to keep ambulances and all essential services ready and to increase the number of hospital beds to handle emergencies. He also called for the immediate relocation of coastal residents to safe zones.

Kakinada district collector Shan Mohan informed the Deputy Chief Minister that 142 pregnant women had already been shifted to rehabilitation centres.

Pawan further directed officials to carry out public announcements in villages to spread awareness about precautionary and relief measures. He advised keeping trained swimmers stationed near water bodies for emergency rescues.

He also instructed authorities to alert fishermen about the storm’s intensity and strictly prevent them from venturing into the sea. Additionally, he called on marketing officials to ensure adequate stocks of essential commodities and to stay prepared for rescue operations in the event of house collapses or structural damage during the cyclone.
