Passenger Numbers Dip At Vizag Airport; Surge Expected By January

Despite the mid-year slowdown, authorities expect the final count to surpass last year’s total, citing the seasonal surge in passenger movement typically seen between October and January: Reports

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam Airport has reported a decline in passenger traffic this year, although officials remain optimistic about a rebound in the coming months. The total footfall in the financial year 2023–2024 stood at 2,788,914 passengers, rising to 2,954,979 in 2024–2025. However, for the current financial year 2025–2026, as of October, the tally stands at only 1,709,912.

Despite the mid-year slowdown, authorities expect the final count to surpass last year’s total, citing the seasonal surge in passenger movement typically seen between October and January.

International services to Abu Dhabi and Singapore are currently operating at nearly 90 per cent occupancy, reflecting strong demand on these routes. However, connectivity has narrowed following the cancellation of flights to Sri Lanka and the discontinuation of services to Malaysia and Thailand earlier this year. Aviation experts suggest that industrial growth in Visakhapatnam could revive international travel demand in the near future.

Domestic operations have shown steady growth, with 9,827 arrivals and 9,826 departures in 2023–2024, increasing to 10,686 arrivals and 10,687 departures in 2024–2025. For the current financial year up to October, the airport has recorded 6,178 arrivals and 6,181 departures.

International traffic has been more volatile, with 233 arrivals and 234 departures in 2023–2024, increasing to 476 arrivals and 475 departures in 2024–2025. Up to October this year, 237 arrivals and 234 departures have been logged.

Although mid-year figures indicate a dip, airport authorities and industry analysts anticipate a rise in traffic over the next few months. Seasonal travel trends and expanding industrial activity in Vizag are expected to help the airport finish the financial year on a stronger note.
