Nellore: In a gruesome matricide that has sent shockwaves through Ongole in Prakasam district, a 72-year-old woman got burnt alive after her son allegedly set fire to their home during the early hours of Tuesday.
The victim, Achcharala Venkata Ramanamma, had been bedridden and unable to move. She lived in a house near Ramalayam in the Gaddalagunta area along with her elder son Kishore Babu.
According to police and local accounts, Kishore Babu, one of Ramanamma’s two sons, is suspected to have deliberately set the house on fire with his mother inside. Neighbours who noticed flames engulfing the house rushed to the spot and confronted Kishore Babu. He reportedly failed to give any explanation and fled.
In the interim, one of the neighbours alerted fire personnel who arrived and doused the flames. By then, only the charred shell of Ramanamma remained, stunning the entire neighbourhood.
Police officials, including One Town circle inspector Nagaraju, visited the scene and began preliminary investigations. Locals told police that Kishore Babu runs a meat shop and lived with his mother. He had been allegedly behaving erratically. Some residents said Kishore Babu had mental health issues.
The victim’s younger son, who works in Chennai, is expected to arrive soon and lodge a formal complaint.
Speaking about the case, Ongole DSP R. Srinivasa Rao told this newspaper that the accused is currently absconding. Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend him.
They are probing the case from all angles, including possible motives behind the brutal act and the accused’s mental condition.
