One Nation, One Election a Feasible Concept: DCM Pawan Kalyan

Pawan Kalyan backs 'One Nation, One Election'; says it boosts governance, curbs poll spending

Vijayawada: Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has asserted that implementing One Nation, One Election system could reduce electoral expenses and enable governments to focus more on delivering the services and benefits to the public.

A discussion on this plan mooted by PM Modi took place at an event organised by the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP in Chennai on Monday. Pawan Kalyan was the chief guest.
In his speech in Tamil, Kalyan expressed his profound respect for Tamil Nadu, citing various cultural icons and venerated deities. He recalled that simultaneous assembly and parliamentary elections had been held in the country from 1952 to 1967.
He felt that the One Nation, One Election initiative would not harm regional parties, as was evident in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the last two elections.
Pawan noted that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi had won two terms in Telangana, while the Telugu Desam emerged victorious in Andhra Pradesh in 2014, followed by the YSR Congress in 2019. Regional parties won the polls in both states.

The Jana Sena leader questioned the logic behind the DMK claiming that regional parties would be disadvantaged by this new electoral policy. He said the situations in Odisha and Telangana were different and the BJP had not achieved the expected results in those states though it seized power in the last polls.

PK said DMK’s patriarch M Karunanidhi had supported the One Nation, One Election idea. He urged all to read Karunanidhi's book "Nenjukku Neethi," in which he backed simultaneous elections.

He criticised the Congress party for its double standard, and felt that it would have supported the policy had it been proposed during their tenure.

Highlighting the advantages of simultaneous elections, Kalyan argued that the ongoing election processes consumed huge governmental resources and hindered the execution of public welfare schemes. One Nation, One Election could reduce electoral expenses and enable the governments to focus more on delivering services and benefits to the public, he asserted.

Former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, national convener of 'ne Nation, One Election campaign, Anil Anthony and other BJP leaders like Arjuna Murthy and Chakravarthy attended the event.
