Oil Exploration and Gas Tapping Turning a Bane for Konaseema People

Kakinada:Oil and gas exploration activities in the Konaseema area have gradually become a bane for the people of the district.

Before the exploration started, livelihood of people depended on coconut gardens and paddy fields. They led a good life amidst coconut groves and paddy fields.

But after oil exploration activities have started, blowouts of wells and gas pipeline blasts have made people restless. Many are living in fear.

Badaru Venkata Satyavathi of Irusumanda village said their coconut farm has been destroyed in the blowout. She has sought compensation from the government.

Another villager B. Lakshmi said officials are now proposing to lay a road through their paddy fields. “Many of us are worried about the compensation for our coconut trees lost. Now paddy fields too are going to be damaged,” she said.

The farmers are worried about the quantum of compensation, which had been meagre in the past. They complain that they are frequently losing their livelihood due to blowouts or pipeline bursts.
