Nellore:The 120-year-old Hathiramji Mutt building located on Gandhi Road in Tirupati is in a hazardous state of disrepair, with cracks and sagging structures presenting safety dangers, officials confirmed on Saturday.
District collector Dr. S. Venkateswar, along with MLA Arani Srinivasulu and municipal commissioner Maurya, visited the site and clarified that rumors regarding the mutt’s demolition were baseless. He mentioned that years of inadequate maintenance and unrestricted commercial leasing of more than 60 shops had contributed to the heritage structure's unstable condition, with experts from IIT warning of possible loss of life if immediate repairs are not made.
“The government places great importance on temples and mutts. Our main goal is to ensure the safety of devotees, shopkeepers, and the public. Only the damaged sections will be repaired in consultation with all stakeholders,” the Collector assured, emphasising that the feelings of the Banjara community, which holds a strong connection to the mutt, would be honoured.
MLA Srinivasulu recalled the mutt’s historic role in sheltering devotees walking to Tirumala and emphasised that neither public sentiment nor safety would be compromised. Leaders, shop owners, and community representatives participated in the inspection.a
