Visakhapatnam: A woman travelling on the Amrit Bharat Express gave birth on the railway tracks at Belagam railway station in Parvathipuram Manyam district on Tuesday after going into labour during the journey.
Priya Patra, a resident of Berhampur in Odisha, was travelling with her family from Berhampur to Surat when she suddenly developed severe labour pains. Her family helped her get down from the train at Belagam station to rush her to a nearby hospital.
However, before any transport could be arranged, she delivered the baby on the railway tracks. Residents and family members immediately arranged an auto-rickshaw and shifted the mother and newborn to the government hospital at the district headquarters.
Doctors said both Priya Patra and the baby were safe and in stable condition.
Family members expressed relief and thanked the locals for their timely assistance, which they said helped avert a major mishap.
