Obtain Additional Urea Allocations from Centre to Address Shortage: YSRC

The State Government should urgently secure additional urea allocations from the Centre to resolve the severe shortage troubling farmers: YSRC

Vijayawada: Former AP State Agriculture Mission vice-chairman M.V.S. Nagi Reddy on Sunday urged the state government to secure additional urea allocations from the Centre to address the acute shortage troubling farmers.

He said farmers were queuing up at PACS and Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs), belying the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s claim that shortage reports are false. “A single visit to PACS or RBKs will reveal the ground reality,” he remarked.
Reddy alleged that private dealers were exploiting farmers by forcing them to buy nano urea and pesticides to access the fertiliser. He pointed out that nearly two lakh hectares had shifted from groundnut and oilseeds to paddy and food grains this year, increasing demand. Heavy rains have also boosted fertiliser requirements for maize, cotton and vegetables, he said.
Refuting claims of “panic buying,” Reddy said most farmers were small and marginal holders, 69 per cent with one acre, 19 per cent with 3.5 acres, and cannot hoard fertilisers. Instead, he blamed traders for creating artificial scarcity. He also cautioned against promoting nano urea, citing Punjab University trials showing reduced yield and protein content.
He demanded that the state act with urgency and secure immediate Central allocations to safeguard farmers from further distress.
