Not many takers for rooftop solar installations despite subsidies

Visakhapatnam: Offtake under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar scheme of February 2024, under which householders can install solar power plants on their rooftops at subsidised cost, has been slow in certain regions of Andhra Pradesh, particularly Srikakulam and West Godavari circles.
The scheme is aimed at promoting a greener and sustainable energy. Customers using up to 120 units of electricity monthly can install a one-kilowatt solar power plant costing ₹60,000 with a subsidy of ₹30,000. Likewise, those consuming up to 240 units monthly can set up a two-kilowatt power plant costing ₹1.2 lakh with a subsidy of ₹60,000. Those utilising up to 360 units monthly can establish a three-kilowatt power plant costing ₹1.8 lakhs of which ₹78,000 will be the subsidy component.
Despite these initiatives, response rates have remained low, particularly from high-rise buildings, upscale neighbourhoods and gated communities. They are concerned about solar panels getting damaged during storms and other associated risks.
However, officials are continuing their efforts. They have reassured the public that the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar scheme will remain in effect until March next year and residents can take advantage of the 50 per cent subsidy.
APEPDCL officials are actively contacting applicants, who have not completed all the necessary formalities for installing rooftop solar power plants. They are informing other consumers about the long-term benefits and cost savings associated with such plants.
