No Heat Wave Likely In AP This Year, Says IMD

In 2024, Andhra Pradesh recorded 27 heat wave days, as per the IMD. April 2024 witnessed 16 days of heat waves while May recorded 11 heat wave days.

Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh may not have any heat wave days this year. Except for a few hot days, most parts of Andhra Pradesh have had an unusually pleasant summer so far.


Regular pre-monsoon showers and some heavy rains in parts of the state for the last couple of days have played a role in keeping the temperatures in check.

As per the forecast, the ongoing thunderstorms, which began in the third week of April, are likely to continue till mid-May. These will keep down the temperatures considerably.

“We may have some hot conditions in some parts of AP. But heat waves are no more likely, as the southwest monsoons will be entering the Andaman sea in another two days,’’ said IMD Andhra Pradesh director Stella S. said.

Andhra Pradesh received 60 per cent excess rainfall in April this year. The rainfall has been 36.1 mm, against the normal 21.9 mm. Maximum departure of 271 per cent has been witnessed in Anantapur district, which received 73.4 mm of rainfall against the normal fall of 19.8 mm.

AP recorded 46.4 mm of rainfall between May 1 and May 3 against the normal rainfall of 37.6 mm. Much to the relief of people, maximum temperatures in the coastal region have dropped below 40 degrees Celsius for the past few days. Maximum temperatures in parts of Rayalaseema region also dipped by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius due to rainfall activity in the state.

AP had experienced the highest number of heat wave days in south India in both 2023 and 2024.
