VIJAYAWADA: A team of scientists from the National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM), Bengaluru, conducted field-level inspections on Saturday as part of an ongoing study into the structural stability of the Indrakeeladri hill slopes in Vijayawada.
The team, led by scientist Prasanna Jain, visited multiple locations on the hill along with temple executive officer V.K. Seena Naik and engineering officials.
The scientists first examined vulnerable stretches near Om turning and the first bend of the ghat road, identified as high-risk zones. During the visit, they demonstrated the functioning of technical instruments used in the study. Through a live demonstration, they explained how the devices assess soil composition, moisture content and rock strength, providing real-time inputs on slope stability.
Later, the team trekked up the hill opposite the head water works and conducted tests on rock and soil samples along the proposed route for a second ghat road.
Temple EO Seena Naik said the survey report would serve as a safety measure for devotees and also act as a blueprint for future developmental works on Indrakeeladri. He said the study, being conducted by a central government institution using advanced technology, is the first of its kind for the hill.
He added that the findings would support major infrastructure planning while ensuring safety and preserving the spiritual character of the hill. Based on the survey results, the temple authorities aim to improve safety and develop Indrakeeladri as a more structured pilgrimage destination.
